1. Special Appeal: Support UN Relief Efforts in Haiti
The nation of Haiti is facing unimaginable suffering and loss following a devastating earthquake which has resulted in significant damage, especially in the heavily populated capital of Port-au-Prince. The Global Compact Office is deeply concerned for the millions of distressed children, women and men – and saddened by the presumed loss of thousands of people, including members of the UN family. We are appealing to our business participants to support relief efforts. Companies are urged to visit http://business.un.org to learn about specific financial and relief needs in the wake of this tragedy. This UN-Business partnership platform is designed to match the needs of UN organizations with the resources and capacities of the private sector in humanitarian emergencies such as this. More.

2. UN Climate Change Conference: Business and Investor Support of Global Agreement

Businesses Call on Political Leaders to Deliver Climate Agreement in Copenhagen

Hosted by the Global Compact and the Copenhagen Climate Council (12 December, Copenhagen), over 300 representatives from business, civil society and international organizations met to discuss the role of business in helping achieve a global climate agreement. Top executives renewed urgent calls for political leaders to deliver a global climate framework that would give business certainty and stability to kick-start the transition to a low-carbon global economy through private sector investment and innovation. Investor Letter to G20 Highlights Role of Markets in Climate Change Solutions

Institutional investors on the Board of the Principles for Responsible Investment (PRI) – the UN-backed global initiative on responsible institutional investment with signatories representing USD 18 trillion in assets under management – sent a letter to Heads of State in the Group of Twenty (G20) on 17 December urging them to recognize the important role that capital markets, institutional investors and private finance will play in order for the needed transformation to a low–carbon and resource-efficient global economy. Op-Ed: Businessmen, the Planet Needs You (International Herald Tribune, 11 December)

In recent months, scores of business leaders and some important investors have pursued what amounts to a global road-show to demonstrate the many initiatives and actions they are undertaking to combat climate change, despite the slowness of many governments to act. 3. General Assembly Welcomes Business Engagement
The Second Committee of the UN General Assembly (Economic and Financial Committee) adopted a resolution articulating the views of UN Member States on the evolving relationship between the UN and the private sector (4 December, New York). The General Assembly recognized the central function of the Global Compact Office in providing stewardship to this relationship, and also recognized the roles of the Principles for Responsible Investment and the Principles for Responsible Management Education – both established with the support of the Global Compact. 4. New Guidance Raises the Bar for Anti-Corruption Reporting by Companies
Transparency International (TI) and the Global Compact released reporting guidance for companies committed to combating corruption (9 December, Berlin), representing the most succinct and practical information available. A set of 22 reporting elements in the areas of commitment and policy, implementation, and monitoring are outlined in the guidance, covering the anti-corruption aspects on which companies should report. 5. Government of India Releases Voluntary Guidelines for Corporate Sector
The Ministry of Corporate Affairs in India released a set of voluntary guidelines on Corporate Governance and Corporate Social Responsibility (24 December, New Delhi). Released at the conclusion of first India Corporate Week, the guidelines incorporate the Ten Principles of the UN Global Compact. More.

6. Updated Procedure for Submitting a Communication on Progress (COP)
Beginning on 1 February 2010, when submitting a COP to the Global Compact website a company will be required to answer basic questions related to the content and format of the COP. The update to the COP submission procedure is intended to improve the ability of the interested parties – such as investors, academics and civil society – to search COP content, and is being implemented in line with the latest COP Policy (April 2009). In addition to the required basic information, the new submission process will allow companies the option to provide more detailed “tagging” information for each report and submit a COP for consideration in the Global Compact Notable COP programme. 7. Participant Status: New Signatories, COPs and Delistings
In December, 87 companies and 25 non-business stakeholders joined the Global Compact. 215 Communications on Progress (COPs) were received, and 10 companies were delisted for failing to communicate on progress.

The largest companies (by employee number) to join during the month were: InterContinental Hotels Group (United Kingdom), Ernst and Young (USA), Eli Lilly and Company (USA), Fujitsu Limited (Japan), Allied Electronics Corporation Limited (South Africa), and GEFCO (France).

Total figures as of 31 December:

Business participants: 5,236
Non-business participants: 1,980
COPs received: 7,021
Delisted business participants: 1,043

1. Caring Caring for Climate: Join the global business platform for climate action
In 2010, the Global Compact will continue to build Caring for Climate, our initiative for companies seeking to demonstrate leadership on climate change. Chief executives who support Caring for Climate are prepared to set goals, implement strategies, publicly disclose emissions and help shape public policy. Approximately 400 companies from 40 countries have signed on to the climate initiative. All Global Compact participants are welcome to join Caring for Climate and participate in the next meeting of signatories (7-8 April, Geneva). Learn more about Caring for Climate.

2. Global Compact/IBA Video for Corporate Counsel: Seeking input
The Global Compact and the International Bar Association (IBA) are collaborating on the development of a video designed to educate corporate counsel on the role that attorneys can play in the corporate sustainability movement. The video will be divided into four sections, covering each of the Global Compact’s principle areas. We are seeking input from corporate counsel, as well as interest in helping to develop the video’s content.

The UN Global Compact Leaders Summit 2010: Building a New Era of Sustainability will bring together chief executives with leaders from civil society, government and the UN to elevate the role of responsible business and investment in bringing about the needed transformation to more sustainable and inclusive markets. 2. Global Compact Asia-Pacific Regional Conclave 2010 (15-16 March, New Delhi)
Organized by the Global Compact Network India in partnership with the UN Global Compact Office, the event will gather representatives from various sectors across the region to explore the role of the Global Compact in facilitating and enhancing engagement of business in the Asia–Pacific on Responsible Business initiatives. 3. Second Meeting of Caring for Climate Signatories (7-8 April, Geneva)
Convened by the UN Global Compact, the event will bring together Caring for Climate signatories will share practices in managing risks and opportunities related to climate change, poverty alleviation and global issues. The event will address implications of the United Nations Climate Conference (COP15) for business, as well as prepare Caring for Climate Signatories for the Global Compact Leaders Summit on 24-25 June 2010. 4. B4E – Business for Environment Global Summit 2010 (22–23 April, Seoul)
An international conference for dialogue and business-driven action on the environment. The summit will address the most urgent environmental challenges faced by the world today.
